You Can Make Money From Your Writing?

My friends and family still don’t understand how I make money from my writing. They don’t understand how you can get online, write things, and make money doing so. They really don’t understand how you can take your laptop to a coffee shop and write stuff that could earn you money.

And I’m not talking about people who are older and don’t know a lot about the internet or online business. I’m talking about young people who read blogs and use social media daily and buy both digital and physical products from Amazon and other sites.

It’s not just limited to my friends and family, though. In fact, when I was getting my car fixed the other day, I was talking to the young woman behind the counter and told her that I made money through ghostwriting and blogging. The look she gave me was clear disbelief.

I tried explaining how I ghostwrite articles for businesses and bloggers.

I tried explaining that I recommend products as an affiliate and get a commission for that.

I tried explaining how I earn money from different monetization strategies for my websites.

The more I explained, the more she didn’t believe me.

Finally, I just changed the subject because I didn’t know what else to say to convince her.

Yes, You Can Make Money From Your Writing

The bottom line is that there are plenty of people out there who could make money from their writing but simply don’t know it’s possible. If you are one of them, I want you to hear me loud and clear: You CAN earn money from your writing, and you can earn a lot of it.

For just short of a year, I had one full-time client who was paying me over $6000 a month to ghostwrite articles for him daily.

On top of that, I had a few other clients that I would ghostwrite for. I was making money from my blogs through affiliate commissions and AdSense. I was also earning a small check from HubPages for articles that I had written years ago. I was earning money on my eBook sales. And I was getting paid for sponsored posts on a few of my blogs.

I was making more than most people I know.

So, yes, you can make money with your writing.

The Amount You Can Make Depends On A Few Things

What I find is that everyone makes a different income with their writing. It all depends on how good their writing is, how fast they write, how many different avenues they have for income, and how driven they are to find opportunities and take action.

My biggest tip to make money through your writing is to keep improving. Improve your writing, blogs, business, and skills. Don’t trick yourself into thinking you know everything there is to know, because you don’t. There is always something to learn about writing, blogging, online business, and the niche you are in. And if you learn something each time a question arises in your head, then you will keep moving forward in your writing career.

Don’t Take My Word For It

I interviewed a few people and asked them how they make money from their writing and what their biggest tip for success is. Following are some answers I received.

Mostly I make money ghostwriting.

I have written three books in the past two years:

  • A housewife’s guide to stock market investing
  • A Christian guide to marriage
  • A true crime story of corporate sabotage

I also write blogs and articles, and every year I write a few wedding speeches (best man, maid of honor, father of the bride, etc.) I’ll never make a living doing wedding speeches, but I really enjoy them.

A. Philtrate (The Teaching Escape Guy)

I write articles for a few contacts. They pay me on a per article basis.

Q. What’s Your One Big Tip For Success As A Writer?

A. TopBlogs (blogger)

Maintain high quality of the content you create. For that, you must research your subject well, care for language, and edit well before submitting.

Always deliver what you promised plus a little more. This way your clients will be thrilled with your work and recommend you to others. Another strategy that you could use to get more clients is to make a deal with your customers.

For example, if a client recommends you to other potential customers and you get five new contracts from his or her referrals you will do a free project for him or her.

Not everybody will be willing to invest in your services for the money that you ask, but building relationships with influencers may bring you benefits even if they don’t hire you directly.

Everybody needs some writing done sometime.  You just don’t know who needs it today. A solid networking strategy can place you in front of enough people that somebody who needs you today will think of you.

After the search engines, which are responsible for most books and other big projects, my network of colleagues and collaborators are my biggest source of business. Referrals from happy customers also brings in some projects, as does repeat business.

Use the 5 currencies – Time, Knowledge, Reputation, Contacts, Money

Use your Time to grow your Knowledge. Use your Knowledge to help others in a visible way. This will grow your Reputation. As your Reputation grows, more people will add you as a Contact. Some Contacts will give you jobs that pay Money.
